| Name of Learning Programme | Master of Art in Governance and Development (MGD) |
1. Rationale
The emergence of governance as a “critical success factor” for sustainable development has created a demand for a cadre of state and non-state functionaries, particularly in developing countries, who are abreast with contemporary trends in governance and development practices. Practitioners, researchers and academicians operating at the nexus of governance and development must possess a broad and refined understanding of governance systems and their influence on development policies and practices.
This course will equip students with competencies to effectively participate in the designing and discharging of policies that align governance with sustainable development at national and sub-national levels.
2. Aims of the programme
The purpose of the course is to contribute to the attainment of sustainable development particularly in Zambia by focusing on the interplay between the exercise of public authority and development outcomes. The course will seek to promote a new and refined perspective on the structuring and exercise of multi-level public authority for sustainable development at national and sub-national levels. It will enable state and non-state actors to appreciate their roles as developmental agents and thus equip them with tools and techniques to harness intellectual and experiential resources required for operating in multi-level spaces of governance and development
3. Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are:
- To develop students’ scholarly and professional research skills in the fields of governance and development
- To equip students with advanced academic knowledge and skills for job performance in state and non-state institutions involved in governance and development
- To expose students to tools, techniques and modern-day trends on the interplay between governance and development from a multi-level perspective
- To examine related systems, functions and institutions of governance and development from a comparative study of countries
