1.0 Rationale

The Bachelor of Arts in Local Government Finance aims to train pre-service and mid-career students in local government finance. The program’s rationale is to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for prudent financial management. It provides discourse on achieving and sustaining success in local authority finance through effective financial management and administration.

2.0 Aims of the Programme

The aim of the Bachelor of Arts in Local Government Finance is to provide graduates with knowledge, understanding, and skills relevant to finance, local government regulations, and practices. It also aims to develop critical and evaluative thinking capacity.

3.0 Objectives of the Programme

The specific objectives of the program are to produce qualified accountants and financial managers who can:

  • Manage local authority revenues and expenditures in the interest of key stakeholders.
  • Apply local government laws in accounting and finance practices.
  • Prepare budgets for both business and non-business organizations.
  • Produce financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct record examination (auditing & taxation).
  • Make sound financial decisions.
  • Analyze information for planning and control.
  • Prepare project proposals and appraisals.
  • Undertake research activities in the area of accounting and finance.

5.0 Entry Requirements

Prospective students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Pass Grade 12 or Form V with a minimum of credit in at least five subjects including English Language; OR
  • ‘O’ Level certificate from a recognized Examination Board with a minimum grade C in at least five subjects including English Language; OR
  • ‘A’ Level certificate from a recognized Examination Board with passes in English Language and any other recognized equivalent subjects.
  • Students possessing a diploma from a recognized College (recognized by Mulungushi University) shall enter into the program at Year 2.
