German Embassy Visits CLGTI’s Ultra-Modern Sewer Water Treatment Plant

On Friday, 6 February 2025, a delegation from the Germany Embassy in Lusaka, visited Chalimbana Local Government Training Institute on a fact-finding mission. The Delegation was led by Ms. Anne Roeske, the Deputy Head of Development Cooperation at the Germany Embassy in Lusaka. The focus of the visit was a familiarization with the operations and maintenance of the  institute’s ultra-modern sewer water treatment plant which was financed by the Germany Development Cooperation through KfW

The delegation leader indicated that the Germany Embassy was interested in understanding the existing conceptual and operational details of the plant in order to determine the feasibility of   using similar interventions in resolving water and sewerage challenges in low income and infrastructurally disadvantaged settlements in Zambia.

The Chalimbana Institute’s sewer water treatment plant was built in 2020 and was financed by the Germany Development Cooperation through KfW it consists of a total of nine repurposed shipping containers with a total treatment capacity of about 500 cubic litres of water. Currently, the Institute is using only around 40 percent of the installed capacity. This underscores the plant’s great potential to service  densely communities -particulary unplanned sett groups in future or to serve as a model project for other regions.

The visit marks an important step towards the sustainable strengthening of water infrastructure and expertise in Zambia with the help of international partners.
